Hutt City Libraries

Live, learn and explore at your local library

There's more than you think at your local Library. Whether you want to tackle a new sport, find out about your favourite hobby, learn a new language or just find a great read - we'll help you out.

Your Local Library

Hutt City Libraries provide resources, services and events at 8 locations around Hutt City. We want to help you to ‘put knowledge to use’, and aim to meet the needs of all residents whether you’re after something for learning or relaxing - whatever your passion of the moment.

Grab a favourite CD or two at your libraryWe aim to gather items that anticipate your needs, including local heritage materials, and provide a public ‘lounge’ where you can meet with others, attend one of our events or use our IT facilities.

The War Memorial Library holds resources of considerable depth and breadth; not only books, newspapers and other print media, but also a growing range of DVDs, CDs and other digital media.  To us the format is not important, it’s the quality of the information that counts. Seven other smaller Community Libraries provide convenient local access to core collections and services. These libraries are also able to draw on the resources of the War Memorial Library.

How do I join?

It’s free to join for Hutt City residents. You can sign up for a card at any of our Libraries, but bring some form of personal ID, such as your driver's licence, and also bring something showing your name and address, e.g. your latest phone or power bill. Non-residents can join and borrow for an annual subscription of $100, or pay $2 per item borrowed.

Most items are free to borrow, but some priority access books and other high demand adult items (such as current DVDs or CDs) will incur a charge stated at the point of display. All children’s items are free.

Your Library card is your passport to our riches. Keep it handy as you will need it to borrow items. Please let us know immediately if your card is lost or stolen, or if you change your address.

If you are under 16, you will require the signature of your Parent or Guardian.
