Setting up a small business & making it grow

Where to start? Right here. There is wealth of free, readily available information & assistance for businesses on the Web. Without IT and the Internet you're limiting your awareness and effectiveness. And of course you will need email for business communication. If you feel unconfident about your online skills or understanding then contact us in Information Services to discuss a tutorial session. There are also a number of firms which will provide total IT support packages tailored to small businesses - on a lease or buy basis.

Next, closely examine your commitment to it all? If that's resolute (and realistic!) then consider step by step all the issues. A quick checklist should include market research, sources of finance, an appropriate business structure (sole trader? company?...),  a business plan, compliance requirements (legal, tax, liabilities, etc), professional relationships (an accountant, lawyer, professional associations?) and required skills & how to develop them.
