Hutt City Libraries holds resources of interest to family historians seeking information on local residents living or dead, including:
- NZ Births, Deaths & Marriages indexes 1840 -1990 (includes local residents)
- Electoral Rolls for all NZ electorates from 1853 - 1981.
- Local Cemetery records for a range of churches & periods plus the Tuckett Index to Hutt Valley burials
- Biographical clippings on local persons in our Hutt Vertical File
- Portraits & other scenes in our Hutt Photos collection
- Local newspapers include death notices & other background; we hold microfilm of the Evening/Dominion Post from 1865
- NZ Census reports from 1871 - 1906
- Business & Post Office Directories from 1948
A range of other national resources on microfiche includes some local coverage such as Expeditionary Force lists, passenger lists, bankruptcy records and Turnbull Library biographical Clippings.

Many of our local history books index historic personalities. We also hold a small number of local family histories.
