Summary:
Photograph showing mid-High Street in Lower Hutt looking to the Western Hills presumably showing the Borough Council Yard about 1940?. This seems to be the site previously occupied by the 1851 Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church until its demolition in January 1940.This view must be before Andrews Avenue was constructed or the new Post Office built (and opened in February 1943). The 2 buildings in the background are presumably St Peter's Hall (mid-rear) and Dudley Cottage. St Peter's Hall was used as the Catholic Church for services until the new church in Knight's Road was opened in November 1945. Rovar Taxis (far right) were at 119 High Street in the early 1940s. "Nimmo's" and "Kenner's" signage is advertising for Wellington firms on the south wall of the building then occupied by Black, an optician.
