Hutt STEMM Festival

At Hutt City Libraries we’re looking forward to this month long festival of science, technology, engineering, and fun!

Check out The Hutt STEMM Festival website for more events on throughout the Hutt City.

Hutt City Libraries' Rocket Day

Join us at Avalon Park on Saturday 12 May for a day of rocketry fun!

Waka Rocket!

In the past, Māori used waka just as we use cars today and New Zealand’s waterways were like roads. Join Te Rōpu Āwhina of Victoria University and Hutt City Libraries as we use waka rockets to test Newton's third law - for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. You will be using a pump (action) to cause a pressure build up, which will cause the waka rocket to move (reaction). The more water we put into the rocket waka, the faster it goes!

Suitable for all ages. Parental supervision advised for younger children.

Avalon Park Saturday 12 May, 12noon-3pm

Rocketry Presentation & Demonstration

Hear Aerospace Education discuss the exciting world of space rockets, using real scale models. They’ll cover topics such as rocket parts and their purpose, how to prepare rockets for flight, how the ignition system works, how to determine a rocket’s altitude, and more! After the presentation, you are invited to watch a live launch demonstration.

Suitable for children, families, and anyone interested in rockets!

Avalon Pavilion Saturday 12 May, 10am-11:30am

Discover: Rockets!

Calling all future engineers! Learn about the science and mathematics of rocketry by building a real flying model of a working rocket. Insert a small (but powerful!) solid-fuel model motor into your rocket vehicle, start your countdown, ignite the engine electrically, and watch your rocket soar into the air to be recovered via parachute! Your journey as a junior rocket scientist starts here!

For children ages 9-12. Spaces for this workshop are strictly limited and children will be working in small groups. Email LibrariesEvents@huttcity.govt.nz to register.

Avalon Pavilion Saturday 12 May, 1pm-3pm FULLY BOOKED

The Sources of Our Resources

The Sources of Our Resources, a series of science seminars from GNS Science to inform, educate, and raise awareness of New Zealand's unique natural resources.

Scientists will offer insights into the latest research and the challenges and issues around their use and exploitation. Come along and ask questions to initiate an informed dialogue on where these resources are found and how they will be managed and cared for in years to come.

We have four talks on during May, see The Sources of Our Resources for more information.
